Bosch demonstrated the benefits of the Electronic Stability Program ESP® recently at the Oschersleben event of the "World Series by Renault" 2005.

In a special area, the Bosch ESP Village, visitors were given the opportunity to get detailed information on the active safety system by way of driving simulator, video or by talking to experts.

Numerous studies worldwide bear evidence to the fact that ESP contributes significantly to greater road safety. With a widespread installation of ESP, the number of serious driver accidents, in which the driver loses control of his vehicle without other traffic participants being involved, can be reduced by up to 62 per cent. Bosch supplies ESP for the Renault models Modus, Clio, Mégane and Scénic.

The "World Series by Renault" is a newly created motor sports event by Renault. During weekend events held on various race tracks in Europe, several racing series of the brand complete their runs. The OEM also uses the opportunity to inform the audience on other aspects and issues, such as road safety.

“Several representative surveys conducted by Bosch across the world have pointed to the fact that although drivers put great emphasis on road safety, very few of them are familiar with the benefits of ESP. This is the reason Bosch uses such events to practically demonstrate the increase in safety provided by ESP. Even in booming automotive markets such as the Middle East, drivers need to be aware and adopt the latest technological developments and innovations in road safety,” said Oleg Riabstev, General Manager, Middle East operations, Bosch Automotive Aftermarket (Bosch AA).

“Statistics show that every year there are over 10,000 road accidents in the UAE, with an increasing number of these accidents resulting in fatal injuries. The number of accidents in Saudi Arabia is also alarmingly high with over 300,000 accidents a year. These figures indicate the need for vehicle owners in the Middle East to realise the importance of advanced vehicle safety devices that minimise accidents in the first place, and secondly reduces human injury during accidents,” he added.

ESP, which always also comprises the safety functions antilock braking system (ABS) and traction control (TC), recognizes skidding motions at the very point of initiation. By reducing the engine output and additionally braking down each wheel separately, it keeps vehicles safely on track.

ESP efficiency has been confirmed by a large number of scientific studies by several OEMs and institutions. The US government agency "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration " (NHTSA), for example, established that passenger cars with ESP as standard equipment suffered significantly less driver accidents in comparison to the same number of cars of the same models before the launching of ESP. A recent Japanese study considers the potential for reduction of serious driver accidents even to be up to 62 per cent.
